V.A.L.I.S. Sistema de Vasta Inteligencia Viva is a curatorial process that has as its conceptual prelude ‘‘Plasticidades Encarnadas. Trazos genealógicos de la producción artística de mujeres trans en México’’, to emphasize and pay tribute to the trajectory of the artist Valis Ortiz. It presents a body of work focused on artistic practices of self-publishing, comics, illustration, as well as musical production created between 2009 and 2022.

V.A.L.I.S. is a visual artist, experimental multi-instrumentalist, and music producer born in Monterrey in 1982. Initially involved in projects in the northern region of Mexico, including the cult band Bam Bam and XYX, as well as Nene Records and Animación Suspendida. In Mexico City, she was an active member of Oris Label, a label and platform for women in electronic music. Her most recent individual music project was Manitas Nerviosas, released in 2021. A pioneer in comics and fanzine practice by trans women in the early 2000s, she was published by editorial houses such as Ediciones Joc-Doc, Ediciones Impresora Ruca, and contributed to the anthology "Fanzinología Mexicana (1985-2015)."

Curatorship

The curation and research were led by Rojo Génesis of the Transfeminine Art Museum.

This curation responds to intergenerational dialogues among artists and friends, where other practices unfold in relation to their work. The works of Lucha A Clara, Sofía Moreno, Patricia Kattkins, Bruja Prieta, Tania Pomar, Sigfrído, and Rojo Génesis come together to historicize and honor it. In Valis' words, her production is a very personal and mystical narrative:

"an amalgamation of biblical and apocryphal delusions from a mind in constant deterioration. From transgender becoming to the final judgment..."

The exhibition takes its name from the artist V.A.L.I.S., which arises as an acronym from the title of the science fiction novel by Philip K. Dick: Vast Active Living Intelligence System, written in 1981. The translation of this text corresponds to the subtitle of this exhibition.

Taller de fanzine y cómic desde las ficciones trans*

Within the framework of V.A.L.I.S. Sistema de Vasta Inteligencia Viva, we have designed, in collaboration with the Museum of Transfeminine Art, a public program aligned with our objectives as a space, as well as with the processes and aesthetic axes of the exhibition. For this reason, we have invited artists from various regions and disciplines to engage in dialogue within our space.

Our first activity was the zine and comic workshop exploring trans* fictions, led by the artist Lluvia Guevara from Mexico City. During the workshop, we examined the qualities of comics, zines, and the intersections between them, focusing on self-publishing. We reflected on the implications of fictional narrative in relation to our personal imaginations and desires.

We consulted publications and archives by women and trans* individuals, as well as the collection and body of work by the artist Valis Ortíz featured in the exhibition.

Throughout the workshop, we facilitated dynamic activities for creating comics in the form of zines, with each participant presenting their own.

The workshop was open to the general public, with priority given to trans* individuals.

Negraconda

Hannya Danielle Torres, also known as Negraconda, is a multidisciplinary artist specializing in performance and performing arts, DJing, and production. She is a master stylist and a pioneer in the ballroom community (vogue scene) and drag queen scene in Guadalajara. A trans woman, of Afro-Latina descent, from the neighborhood, she is an activist and "hartivist" for the rights of transgender people and LGBTQIA+ communities. She is a sensitizing and educating figure regarding transgender/LGBTQIA+ experiences in all social, political, and other spheres. As part of the public program of V.A.L.I.S. Sistema de Vasta Inteligencia Viva, she will present a performance.

Addly Muff

Transsexual lesbian vampire, composer, singer-songwriter, producer, and DJ from the State of Mexico, with one album ("Furia Trans"), one EP ("Exodia"), and one single ("Que Se Vea"). Captivates the senses of the audience who willingly become victims of her music, blending trumpets and drums to the rhythm of the underworld. As part of the public program of V.A.L.I.S. Sistema de Vasta Inteligencia Viva, she will present her musical proposal through a set.

América Fendi

Artist and music producer in Mexico City. As part of the public program V.A.L.I.S. Sistema de Vasta Inteligencia Viva, she will present her musical proposal through a set.

Lluvia Guevara

Trans woman and visual artist from Mexico City. She has participated in and coordinated collective exhibitions, zine fairs, zine libraries, public talks, and conducted self-publishing workshops for Dissident communities and exclusively for Trans women. She is currently part of the Minimprenta program at Pandeo, a project that facilitates the sharing of dissident knowledge, support, and training in print publishing processes. As part of the public program of V.A.L.I.S. Sistema de Vasta Inteligencia Viva, she will present the workshop "Fanzine y cómic desde ficciones trans*".

Bruja Prieta

Bruja Prieta's musical style creates a space where avant-garde club sounds converge with percussions and rhythms from Latin America, viewed through a transancestral lens, resulting in dance, sweat, and lively hip movement. She has performed at festivals such as Ceremonia, Bahidora, Radio Bosque, Somos Festival, as well as events like Algo Bien, Desculonización Traición, Por Detroit, and even headlining the Pride March at Mexico City's Zócalo, always leaving a fiery impression in the DJ booth.

Doreem (Tania Pomar)

Doreem (Tania Pomar). She has been producing music since the 1980s in various projects: Melamina Ponderosa, Sonido Continental, The Fashion Group, Jr Datsun, Duopandamix, Mecsa Droid. She has released three LPs under the electronic music label Static Discos and one LP under the Stargazing at Blank Skies label. Currently, she publishes under her personal label, Vermont Electronics. She resides in Mexico City.

Floresrosx

Floresrosx She is a transfemeNena illustrator, fanzine creator, nonconformity enthusiast, and founder of the independent transgender publishing label of the same name. Her illustration and comic work focus on providing sensitive critiques of this hetero-idiotic and cis-stupid world. Her graphics revolve around extreme uses of color, psychedelia, precise lines, and simple humor. Explorations of the trans body, anality, and absurdity coexist, all intertwined with the intersection of autobiography and fiction.
